W3A Conclave Is A Month AwayMarch 26, 2007Our Neighboring Section to the West is about a month away from their conclave at the College of Marin, April 27-29. Each year several members from W3B make the trip over to the bay area to attend the 3A conclave. This year W3A has released a promotional powerpoint presentation that is aimed at OA members from W3B. We hope as many arrowmen from our section that can, will take advantage of this opportunity to see what other conclaves are like. March COC Date ChangedFebruary 15, 2007The March COC meeting was originally going to be held on March 10th. Because the Western Region will be having an NLS on that weekend in W3B, too many of our section key leadership would not be able to attend. The meeting has been moved to the following weekend, on March 17th. It will begin at the usual time, 11:00 AM and should conclude around 3:00 PM. For section leadership, lunch will be provided. Section Leadership Gets Conclave RollingJanuary 8, 2007
New National Officers Elected!!!December 28, 2006
2007 Central Region Chief - Don Hough (C-3B) Nation Leadership Seminar Held In Bay AreaNovember 28, 2006The Western Region training team put on the largest National Leadership Seminar of the year last weekend at Camp Bothin in Fairfax, CA. Thirty-six arrowmen from W3B took part in this one-of-a-kind training experience. If you didn't make it to this NLS, your next opportunity will be March 16-18, when W3B hosts an NLS at Ranco Alegre Scout Camp in the mountains north of Santa Barbara. National Leadership Seminars are by invitation only, so if you are interested in attending, talk to your lodge chief or lodge adviser. That same weekend, also at Ranco Alegre, the Western Region will be holding a National Lodge Adviser Training Seminar. NLATS is usually only held once or twice a year and this one will be right in our backyard. You don't have to be a Lodge Adviser to attend NLATS, you just have to be an adviser who has already attended an NLS. Quality Lodge Deadline Fast ApproachingOctober 30, 2006There are only about two months left until the quality lodge petitions are due. Keep in mind that Section W3B encourages lodges to get their petitions in at the beginning of December which leaves only one month left. Quality lodge is not a special award that is given to outstanding lodges, but is a baseline standard that all lodges should be able to meet. In order to be successful each year in meeting this standard, a plan should be established before the year even begins. As 2006 comes to a close, now is the time to begin planning for 2007. Because the section wants every lodge to be a quality lodge, we would like to remind you of some of the valuable resources that are available. The Western Region put together a Quality Lodge Planbook that is full of useful information when planning for the next year. To download a copy of the Quality Lodge Planbook, click here. 2006 Conclave Highlight's DVDOctober 20, 2006If you didn't order one at conclave, it's not too late. The highlights DVD will feature the videos shown at the conclave theme show and pictures from the conclave, as well as Order of the Arrow and Section W3B clipart. As an added bonus, we will also include the Conclave Patrol video from the 2005 conclave. The DVD is free with a $10 donation to Section W3B and will be delivered to you by mail sometime in early December. It is a great way to promote conclave to new arrowmen in your lodge and chapter. To order a conclave highlights DVD, click here. If you have photos from the 2006 W3B Conclave that you would like to donate to be included on the DVD, send them to: webmaster@sectionw3b.org 2006 Conclave A Big Success!September 19, 2006The 2006 W3B Conclave was a huge success thanks to all of the hard work by the Council of Chiefs. Service lodge, Amangi-Nacha, was an outstanding host.  We couldn't have done it without them. The section would also like to thank the Dixon May Fairgrounds for the use of their facilities. It was a great place to hold a conclave. Arrowmen from all over California and Nevada were in attendance, as well as Region Chief, Kieran Thompson, and National Chief for the day, John Montgomery, from Tah-Heetch lodge. The morning training and the afternoon competitions kept evryone busy and excited until the theme show on Saturday night. The Arrowman Show with Joey Goodknight was the main event, with giveaways, a skybox, the marshmellow challenge, Fandango, and ice cream at the end. New Section Officers ElectedSeptember 17, 2006On Saturday afternoon at the Conclave, all of the youth members present gathered in Denverton Hall to elect their section leadership for the next year. The new officers were then officially installed at the closing awards show on Sunday morning, and will serve until September 16, 2007. The new W3B Section Officers are: Section Chief: AJ Meyers from Tah-Heetch LodgeSection Vice-Chief: Jake Knudsen from Tannu Lodge Section Secretary: Joey Goodknight from Amangi-Nacha Lodge Ross Armstrong Receives the Distinguished Service AwardThe 2006 recipients of the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) were announced earlier this week. Congratulations to Ross Armstrong from Tannu Lodge who was one of only thirty-eight outstanding arrowmen from across the country to receive this incredible award. The DSA is only awarded on NOAC years and there are less recipients than there are sections in the OA. Ross is a former W3B Section Chief as well as the 2005 Western Region Chief. He will be presented with his award at NOAC this summer. John Mattern Memorial High Adventure ScholarshipThe Council of Chiefs voted unanimously at the March section meeting to name the section high adventure scholarship after former section chief John Mattern. John was serving as the Section High Adventure Chairman, but was tragically lost in a car accident in February. The scholarship will allow two arrowmen to attend an OA High Adventure program each year at almost no cost. Each of the two arrowmen will receive $250 for their program fee and transportation costs. Any arrowman in Section W3B that will be attending at least one of the OA High Adventure programs in 2006 can apply for this year's scholarship. For more information about the scholarship, click here. In Memory of John Mattern, 2005 Section W-3B Chief
John Mattern, the 2005 Section Chief was tragically lost in a car accident along with his girlfriend, Sheri French, about 5pm Saturday, February 18th. John, who was a member of Orca Lodge, will always be remembered as the Section "Chef" for the "chefs hat" he wore at the Frogtown Conclave in 2003. John was elected Chief in January 2005. John did a fantastic job leading us towards a truly awesome 2005 Conclave in Santa Rosa. John was well spoken and truly cared for everyone he met. He pushed all of us to make sure we "did our best". At the 2005 Tah-Heetch Lodge Dinner, John spoke about the importance of arrowmen becoming better trained to serve fellow scouts and finding new friends in the bigger world of Scouting at the Section Conclave. This is John's legacy to Section W-3B - making Training a more important part of the conclave and getting more young arrowmen active in the Order of the Arrow. Keep John's family and friends in your prayers as we comfort each other and honor Eagle Scout and Vigil Honor Member John Mattern - our fellow OA brother. Orca Lodge Recieves 2006 Service GrantOrca Lodge received a $3,150 Service Grant to build a shower facility at their council summer camp. It was announced at the National OA Planning Meeting on December 29th, 2005, in Dallas, Texas. Operations Update: Section Officer ElectionsThe National OA Committee voted in the fall of 2005 to make a change to the election process for section officers. Prior to this change, when electing section officers, each lodge in the section had ten votes to award to candidates however they chose. The number of youth in attendance from each lodge did not matter. The new election procedure allows each lodge to only cast votes equal to the number of youth that are present at the election, with a maximum of ten votes. This means that for lodges with more than ten youth at the conclave, nothing will change, but lodges with less than ten youth members present will get less votes. The first time this new rule will affect W3B will be at the 2006 conclave in Dixon, California. |
